Deciphering Solar Magnetic Activity: 140 Years of the ‘Extended Solar Cycle’ – Mapping the Hale Cycle

چکیده

Abstract We investigate the occurrence of “extended solar cycle” (ESC) as it occurs in a host observational data spanning 140 years. Investigating coronal, chromospheric, photospheric, and interior diagnostics, we develop consistent picture activity migration linked to 22-year Hale (magnetic) cycle using superposed epoch analysis (SEA) previously identified termination events key time for SEA. Our shows that ESC cycle, highlighted by terminator-keyed SEA, is strongly recurrent throughout entire record studied, some Applying same SEA method sunspot confirms Maunder’s butterfly pattern subset underlying suggesting production sunspots not fundamental feature but is. Deciphering Solar Magnetic Activity: Spotting Solar Cycle 25

We present observational signatures of solar cycle 25 onset. Those signatures are visibly following a migratory path from high to low latitudes. They had starting points that are asymmetrically offset in each hemisphere at times that are 21–22 years after the corresponding, same polarity, activity bands of solar cycle 23 started their migration. Those bands define the so-called “extended solar ...

Deciphering solar magnetic activity: on grand minima in solar activity

The Sun provides the energy necessary to sustain our existence. While the Sun provides for us, it is also capable of taking away. The weather and climatic scales of solar evolution and the Sun-Earth connection are not wellunderstood. There has been tremendous progress in the century since the discovery of solar magnetism—magnetism that ultimately drives the electromagnetic, particulate, and eru...

The heliospheric Hale cycle over the last 300 years and its implications for a “lost” late 18th century solar cycle

A Hale cycle, one complete magnetic cycle of the Sun, spans two complete Schwabe cycles (also referred to as sunspot and, more generally, solar cycles). The approximately 22-year Hale cycle is seen in magnetic polarities of both sunspots and polar fields, as well as in the intensity of galactic cosmic rays reaching Earth, with oddand even-numbered solar cycles displaying qualitatively different...

The 22-year Solar Magnetic Cycle. Ii. Flare Activity

This paper is part of a larger set concerning the study of the last Hale cycle, a cycle that had an unexpected behaviour. Here we analyze the occurrence of the solar flares registered in X-ray as well as in Hα, with the aim to find an explanation for the activity much lower than predicted of the current 11-year solar cycle. We conclude that it could be determined by a pulse of flare activity in...

Meridional Circulation and the Solar Magnetic Cycle

The Sun’s magnetic cycle manifests itself in an year periodic variation in the number of sunspots seen on the solar surface and a periodic reversal in the polarity of its large-scale magnetic fields. Exploring the origins of this magnetic cycle can unravel the physical mechanisms at work in the interior of magnetized stars like the Sun. Such studies are also important for understanding how the ...
